"The federal government sees no problem with massive, overwhelming debt, so why should the American people?" - Problem with this is that the people in government are usually the people with greater means than your average citizen.
I know exactly what you mean about the desperation and shame. I basically owe the gubment a new car, and along with the financial crisis, the job market has gone to shit and I can't find a job to start paying off my loans. There is lots of stigma surrounding inability to repay loans, and in a system where a job is the next step after graduation, not having a job immediately (and thus not having money) is seen as shameful.

YES.

I am one of those people who got out of school having done everything right and still couldn't get work. I'm in grad school now and terrified that I'm going to get out again and find myself in the same position, having once again done everything right, graduated top of my class, etc.

It is just chilling. And to hear my own bloody parents, who know how hard I've struggled, write this stuff off as people being irresponsible--well, was it irresponsible of them to sign up along with me for student loans so I could attend $30,000 a year university?

I'm paradoxically getting more and more conservative in my lifestyle and more and more radical in my politics. I'm not at the "let's pull the capitalist robber barons out in the streets and shoot them" stage yet, but I am getting there. I'm sick of people who would curb stomp a puppy for a .3% improvement on a stock return running things. Is that so wrong? It does destroy lives. We drive the poor off cliffs, then say they're not flapping their arms hard enough to fly back up.
