Be silent.

Be still.

*Natalia’s head explodes. Brain matter splatters onto the coffeetable and Zara the dog.*

This column – and the ensuing “debate” in the comments section – makes it all the more apparent that people at Duke and around Duke do not speak the same language. The communication breakdown is almost complete – all we need now is for John Waters to show up (why? Why not?).

Frankly, the implications that the atmosphere surrounding the rape claims in both cases (Lax and Sigma house) has on race relations in America ARE SIMPLY MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE WELL-BEING OF ONE WOMAN (OR EVEN TWO). Dialogue over social issues, no matter how controversial the topic, is simply a higher priority right now.

*Natalia’s spleen explodes.*

*Natalia is the headless, spleen-less rider. She can’t even enjoy her damn coffeebreak anymore.*

*Natalia will not provide an actual commentary on Stephen Miller’s column. Natalia is fed up with being attacked over these issues.*

  1. I don’t like Stephen’s writing either. I knew that he would be all over this thing – but in contrast to his previous columns, this one appears to actually have a thesis (I am not obliged to agree or disagree with said thesis in either way – and I don’t want to discuss the specifics personally, since I have received some serious hate-mail and threats over these issues myself).

Of course, Stephen, once again, squandered his chance for dialogue. In typical fashion, he used his position (a very good position – like it or not, people do pay attention to him nowadays) to attack, belittle, and accuse – rather than to find common ground.

Duke is getting torn in all sorts of wild directions by this thing – which is why my head and spleen are exploding.

  2. How the hell can you say things like “This column – and the ensuing “debate” in the comments section – makes it all the more apparent that people at Duke and around Duke do not speak the same language” and not attribute that to racial and (much more so) class differences?

As I’ve said before, Miller’s premise is just bullshit: the LAX case was the exception, not the rule. Duke is not a feminist campus, it is not a liberal campus that has historically jumped at any rape or sexual assault. In fact it has stayed really fucking quiet about the hundreds of assaults that take place each year. In fact, by having a huge Greek scene, it actively encourages them.

We cannot solve these issues while maintaining a snobbish divide from Durham. Sending our blond little sorority girls into the big scary ghetto beyond the walls to ‘do community work’ doesn’t solve racial and class tensions. It hasn’t in the past and it never will. Durham will not accept Duke and Duke will continue to be terrified of Durham.

You go on and on about how this is ‘tearing Duke apart’. Bullshit. Duke is more united than ever in its hatred of the left, in its elitism, in its love of money, in its academic snobbery, and so and so forth. It is precisely that image of monolithic unity that drives a wedge between Duke and Durham.

The LAX case was a wonderful opportunity for bettering relations between Duke and Durham. Thanks to Miller and his cronies, we are more united in our tiny little island of self love than ever, and further away from actually opening our eyes to what’s happening around us.

    Fuck this shit.

  3. ***Sending our blond little sorority girls into the big scary ghetto***

    That’s a stereotype.

I don’t really have anything else to say, since I’m already committed to not taking anyone’s bait on this one.

  4. I live in the ghetto. I eat blonde sorority girls for breakfast. Please send more my way! I’ve been hibernating in the woods, subsisting on dogs and Ukranians for way too long now. I need the strength to get back home.

  5. and by the way I don’t discriminate. As long as they’re blonde and in a sorority, I’ll consume them. Class, race, real or highlighted blonde- I’ll take ’em! I like to think of it as civil service.
