The Long, Strange Trip of Norma Khouri

My article on con-artist Khouri is up on Eteraz.org.

Please read when you get the chance. It’s almost as awesome as my paean to the latest Doctor Who. No, seriously. It’s about Jordan, it’s about writing, it’s about lies, it’s about honour-killing, and it’s about the darker trends in our culture.

Thank you very much: Ali Eteraz, Rana Husseini, and Anna Broinowski.

With a shout-out to Jerry Garcia, wherever he may roam.

  1. Hey! You are famous on Feministe!

Great article. How sad that someone would exploit honor killings for their own personal bullshit reasons. (And how sad that her editors have apparently never seen the inside of an atlas..)

  2. I was just wondering, what has snide comment about Karl Rove has to do with the rest of the story? Would you say that Crystal Magnum can be an intern for, I dunno, Jacque Chirac?

In fact, just like Magnum made it more difficult for real rape victims, Norma Khouri made it much more difficult for real targets and survivors of “honor killings”. Granted, Jordan is the last country that comes to mind – but there are numerous honor killings in Pakistan, Iran and elsewhere.

  3. Snide? But I am giving Karl a compliment! He is the master of all things PR! Norma could have had a brilliant career under his tutelage.

I don’t particularly like Rove – but I do have an eye for talent.

  4. Part of having an eye for talent is to be able to separate genuine form hoax. I don’t know of any hoaxers in Rove’s employ.

I realize that you understand very well what I am talking about without my additional clarifications. You avoiding the topic suggests that you don’t have arguments “on the merit”.

  5. Oh and, uh yeah… *cough*

    Fame!

    I want to live forever!

    Fame!

    Doo bee doo bee.

Can’t remember the rest. But thanks for letting me know, Emma. I might have missed it.

  6. Thanks for the sharp analysis. You’ve highlighted an “excellent” example of this booming cottage industry of fraudulent “insider” exposes from opportunistic pseudo-activists that grossly exagerrate Muslim problems and gleefully pander to mainstream ignorance and prejudice for professional gain. There certainly are serious social problems in Muslim countries–and many others–but cheaply politicizing them in this manner helps no one, except reactionaries on both sides.
